Retaining Walls in Northern Kentucky
K&M designs and builds retaining walls across Northern Kentucky — with the excavation, compacted base, gravel backfill and drainage that keep a wall standing in our clay soil. If you've got a slope to hold or an old wall giving up, we'll come look for free.

Wall work we handle.
New retaining walls
Segmental block walls engineered for the slope, soil and water on your lot.
Failing wall replacement
Leaning, bowing or crumbling walls torn out and rebuilt right.
Terracing
Stepped walls that turn one steep grade into usable levels.
Garden & border walls
Smaller walls that frame beds, trees and entrances.
Steps & wall combos
Steps built into or beside the wall so the slope works for you.
Drainage behind the wall
Gravel backfill and drain pipe — the difference between decades and a few winters.
Done the way this ground demands.
A retaining wall in Boone County is holding back more than dirt — it's holding back clay that swells when wet and freezes solid in January. Walls fail here when water builds up behind them with nowhere to go. That's why the parts of our walls you never see — base depth, compaction, gravel backfill, drain pipe — are where most of the work happens.
Hillside yards in Florence, Union and Burlington are exactly where we do our best work: turning an unusable slope into flat, usable yard, or terracing a grade into something you can actually plant, mow and live on.
Signs you need a wall (or a new one)
- An existing wall is leaning, bowing or losing blocks
- A slope is washing out — mulch, soil or gravel keeps ending up downhill
- Water pools against the house at the bottom of a grade
- You're losing usable yard to a hillside

Retaining Walls questions.
Anything else — ask on the walk-through. You'll get the same straight answer either way.
How much does a retaining wall cost in Northern Kentucky?
The honest answer: it depends on height, length, materials, access and how much drainage the site needs. A short garden wall and a six-foot structural wall are very different projects. We quote from a free walk-through so the number reflects your actual slope, not a guess.
How long does a retaining wall last?
Built with proper base, backfill and drainage, a segmental block wall should outlast the mortgage. Built without them, walls around here start leaning within a few winters — we replace those all the time.
Do I need a permit or engineering for my wall?
It depends on the height and your city or county's rules. We'll tell you exactly what applies to your project on the walk-through, before any work starts.
Can you fix a leaning wall, or does it have to be replaced?
Sometimes a wall can be rebuilt with the existing block; often the cause is water behind it, which means it needs to come apart to fix properly. We'll give you a straight answer on-site — repair when it's right, replace when it's not.
